Milk purchases during February 2017 were 4,7% less than during February 2016. If adjusted for 2016’s leap-year effect milk purchases in February 2017 were still 1,3% down on those of February 2016. Total milk purchases in January and February were 0,9% down on 2016, unadjusted and 0,7% adjusted for the leap year. Future milk purchases will depend on the negative effect of the current drought in the Eastern and Western Cape and on the positive effect of the improved supply of roughage and lower grain prices on milk production. The postponement of the expected increase in producer prices will impact negatively on production growth in the coming months.
