New dairy regulations implemented

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) confirmed with stakeholders in the dairy industry that the implementation date of the new dairy and imitation dairy regulations (R.260) published in the Government Gazette on 27 March 2015 was 28 March 2016. According to DAFF its inspectors will start enforcing the new regulations and issue directions for non-compliance, if necessary. Companies still deviating from the requirements of R.260 will be issued with directions for compliance up to 30 September 2016. After that date DAFF inspectors have been instructed to proceed directly to issuing seizures of dairy products and imitation dairy products that do not comply with the requirements of Regulation R.260. As an industry initiative the Dairy Standard Agency will, within its means, render support services in collaboration with the DAFF to assist industry members with labelling compliance issues towards September 2016.

Industry role players who require assistance in this regard can contact the managing director of the DSA, Jompie Burger, at 012 665 4250 or send an email to jompie@dairystandard.co.za. For more information about the new regulations, click HERE.
