Slight increase in monthly milk intake

Milk SA estimates a total milk intake for August 2016 of 264 million litres, 0,8% more than in August 2015. The total milk intake for the first eight months of 2016 is estimated at 1 884 million litres, 3,4% down on the same period last year.  More favourable production conditions in the pasture areas are probably the main reason for the higher milk intake estimate. Future milk production trends will depend on the spring rainfall and on future milk: feed price ratios. Grain prices will probably, in spite of better international crops, not decrease much in the current season. However, there are some indications of higher producer prices that will encourage farmers to increase production.
