Successful Silage and Hay Day

One of the highlights of this year’s dairy calendar, the MPO Mpumalanga and Alzu Silage and Hay Day, was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended it. It took place on Thursday 21 January at the Alzu Community Hall in Middelburg. Products and machinery of 47 sponsors were exhibited and presentations, including practical advice, were made by experts. The event was attended by more than 400 farmers, students and input suppliers.

George Eybers of Alzu welcomed everyone before Ernst Janovsky from Absa AgriBusiness gave an outlook for agriculture in 2016. Kenneth Botha from Nutrigenics shed light on the question whether feed costs can be reduced by more silage products. Dr Chris van Dijk, MPO CEO, shared information on animal health problems associated with silage. Albert van Rensburg from Biomin concluded the presentations with advice on how to control fermentation when making silage.

Douglas Dickson, Chairman of MPO Mpumalanga, said he was pleasantly surprised with the record attendance of the event. He added that the MPO wishes to thank Alzu, Biomin, Absa, the organisers, other sponsors and exhibitors who all contributed to the success of the day.
