Unprocessed milk production for April 2020 is estimated at 240 million litres, 2,83% less than in April 2019 and cumulative unprocessed milk production for 2020 (inclusive of April) was 1 042 million litres, indicating a growth of 0,34% for the first four months of 2020 when compared to the same period of 2019 (source: Milk SA last two months preliminary).

The average milk price:feed price ratio in 2019 was 1,27:1 and 0,65% more unprocessed milk was produced if compared to 2018. The average milk price:feed price ratio for the first four months of 2020 was 1,22:1 and 0,34% more unprocessed milk was produced if compared to the first four months of 2019.

During this time of increased uncertainty regarding the demand for dairy products due to the extraordinary economic situation in South Africa, communication in the value chain from the demand side is more critical than usual and should be more dynamic. It is critical for producers to produce milk in harmony with demand.
