There is a critical deficiency in the transformation processes aimed at emerging and potential farmers in South Africa i.e. capacity building. There is also a desperate need for training of, and sound advice to the emerging livestock farming sector. In an effort to address this shortcoming the Institute for Dairy Technology of the Milk Producers’ Organisation offers training and skills transfer to all emerging and potential livestock farmers. The Institute is involved in technology transfer and training of commercial dairy farmers, and emerging livestock farmers. All the available information, learning material and programmes are offered to all potential and emerging livestock farmers in a process of developing sustainable agri-enterprises. The merit of this training, technology transfer and mentoring programmes lies in empowering (alleviating poverty, uplifting) potential and emerging farmers as part of the food supply chain.
The Institute’s one-stop service includes animal health, care of farm animals, goat farming, animal husbandry, productivity and free market system, motivation and work ethics, udder health, milk production, financial management, milk harvesting, milk quality, milk recording, milk hygiene, vaccines and immunisation, nutrition, breeding, reproduction, training (various courses) skills development and technology transfer. The target groups /sectors for the training and technology transfer offered by the Institute are:
- Emerging and potential dairy and livestock farmers
- Emerging and potential dairy and livestock farmers who are involved in share-farming and share-milking
- Employees of commercial farmers
- Assistants, managers and supervisors.
