Organised agriculture’s position on live export of sheep

The Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO), together with Agri SA, Agri Northern Cape, and Agri Eastern Cape support the trade of livestock by ship, if its ethically done without animal abuse.

These shipments should be done within the OIE standards, overseen by government as the regulatory authority.

The representatives of Agri SA, the provincial affiliates and the RPO, recently met in Bloemfontein under the chairmanship of Agri SA president Pierre Vercueil. There was consensus that this form of trade in livestock could raise the bar for the industry.

The RPO, as member of the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF), has been furnished with documentation and reports relating to the previous two shipments done by Al Mawashi from South Africa. Government officials tasked with insuring compliance have indicated in these reports that the OIE standards have been complied with.

Furthermore, two veterinary experts, on behalf of the RMIF, inspected the ship and feedlot. In their opinion, both the ship and feedlot are compliant. It is further their opinion that the sheep should be loaded as soon as possible.

The interdict currently in place will be finally decided upon on the 6th of August 2020 by the Grahamstown High Court. As such, the RPO together with Agri SA, Agri Northern Cape, and Agri Eastern Cape, support the discharge of the interdict for the reasons set out above.
