Cheese imports down prices up

During the MPO and Agri Inspec’s monthly import monitoring meeting on Wednesday, 11 June, it was noted that prices of imported dairy products have increased sharply from January, in particular the prices of gouda and cheddar. Further, import volumes of gouda have declined by 71% from 321 tonnes during January to May 2013 to 92 tonnes during the same period this year. Cheddar cheese import volumes fell by 57% from 935 tonnes during January to May last year to 399 tonnes during the corresponding period this year. The decline in gouda and cheddar imports are ascribed to very high international prices combined with the weakening rand, which makes it unprofitable to import.
