Is forage good for calves?

Is forage good for rumen development in calves? The answer to this age-old question will affect the optimal feeding strategy for calves. The truth is that on farms and in research studies the effect of feeding forage to calves is not consistent – sometimes calves fed forage perform better than those without it. One may need to look at this problem from a different angle to settle the question once and for all.  When designing a calf-feeding programme, we need to balance the risk of acidosis with adequate grain intake so as to stimulate rumen development and ensure a smooth transition at weaning.
