MPO board commits to explore export opportunities

The MPO board committed themselves to develop a strategic approach to attract investors to the dairy industry and exploit export opportunities at a board meeting held in Pretoria on Thursday, 5 June. The board, chaired by Mr Tom Turner, discussed various issues important to the primary dairy industry. The board agreed that South African milk producers have become increasingly competitive and currently supply raw milk at extremely competitive prices. This should open the door to exports into Africa and countries such as China and India.

Recent Chinese interest to invest in a dairy processing plant in KwaZulu-Natal using local raw milk to manufacture dairy products for export to China confirms this.

In addition, the board contemplated the fact that other international dairy processors may be interested in expanding their businesses to South Africa on the back of export opportunities created by current producer prices. The MPO board decided to investigate a strategic approach aimed at attracting investors and exploiting growing export opportunities internationally and on the continent. In addition, the board confirmed its support to local export initiatives.
